History of the flag

legend relates that the "Dannebrog" fell from the skies on 15 June 1219, the day in which King Waldemar II defeated the heathen Estonians in battle. The cross is, unsurprisingly, for christianity. Leaving aside the legend, for a moment, the design is possibly linked to the war ensign of the Holy Roman Empire. A white cross on a red background was used by the Empire in many of its provinces, including Denmark.
Stuart Notholt 1995-1O-10

Leaving aside the legend, I don't think that Denmark ever acknowledged itself as a province of the Holy Roman Empire, at least not for any great length of time. Doesn'texclude the possibility that they borrowed it anyway, however.
