Like Komi, Mari are Finnish. "Mari" means "men"; they call their land Marintasavalta (land of men).
The flag was adopted on 3 September 1992; it has three horizontal 1:2:1 lapislazuli-white-light red strips. Near the pole, in the white strip there is a dark-red device, under it, the writing "Marj El".

The coat-of-arm shows the same device on a golden shield, with ears of wheat, oak leaves and pine needles, all tied by the national colors.
