The Federation of South Arabia declared its independance from Britain on 1967-11-30, under the name "People's Democratic Republic of Yemen". The flag was adopted on the same date.

South Yemen merged with North Yemen on 1990-05-22 to form Yemen.

The British intrests in South Arabia consisted of :

  • the Colony of Aden
  • the Protectorat of Aden, divided in
    • the Western Protectorat, consisting of many small Emirates and Sultanates
    • the Eastern Protectorat
      • Qu'aiti State of Shihr and Mukalla
      • Kathiri State of Sai'un
      • Mahri State of Qishn and Socotra

On 1959-02-11 was created the Federation of South Arabian Emirates, composed of :

  • on creation on 1959-02-11
    • Emirate of Beihan (Bayhani)
    • Emirate of Dhala (Amiri)
    • Sultanate of Audhali
    • Sultanate of Fadhli
    • Sultanate of Lower Yafa
    • Territory of Upper Awlaki (with the tribal territory of Nissiyin)
  • from October 1959
    • Sultanate of Lahej (Abdali)
    • Sultanate of Lower Awlaqui (with the tribal territory of Ba Kazim)
  • in February 1960
    • Territory of Dhatina

On 1962-04-04 the Federation was enlarged and renamed "Federation of South Arabia". It had 17 members :
