After Egypt and Syria made United Arab Republic in 1958, and Iraq and Jordan made Federation - Arab Union, UAR and Yemen made a confederation called United Arab States. There was no flag of this new state, but Yemen took over the flag of UAR removing one of two stars. This flag was officially hoisted on 01-NOV-1962.
When N and S Yemen united, new flag removed the star from it. There were attemtions of uniting in 1972 and 1979, but I thing the current flag came in use sometimes in 80's.
