Origin and meaning of colors

The blue-yellow-red colours of Chad are a combination of the blue-white-red of France, the former colonial power, and the green-yellow-red of the Pan-African (e.g., Ethiopian) ones. Cf. Central African Republic whose colors are blue-yellow-red and green.
Similarly Andorra's blue-yellow-red is a combination of the national colours of France and Spain.
Roy Stilling, 10-OCT-1995

Blue officially represents sky, hope, agriculture and southern part of land. Yellow is for northern part (desert) and sun. Red is for prosperity, unity and the readiness of citizens to sacrifice for their country. The flag was officially accepted on 6-NOV-1959. Proportions are 2:3.

FROLINAT flag

by Jaume Olle

The FROLINAT (Front de Libration Nationale du Tchad - Chad National Liberation Front) was a rebel movement founded by Abba Siddick in 1966. It was supported by muslim people of northern Tchad and was in revolt against President Tombalbaye. In 1967-79 it controlled the north of Tchad. In 1978 a faction of FROLINAT (led by Hissene Habre) entered the government in Ndjamena. Habre overthrew the new president Malloun (1975-79). In August 1979 another faction, the Peoples Armed Forces, led by Goukouni Oueddei, came to power (in a coalition with other factions of FROLINAT and the southern people). After that, FROLINAT was not a unified movement.
