Location: central Eurasia
Status: Constituent republic of the Russian Federation.
Notes: A Finno-Ugric people, the Udmurts used to be known as the Votyaks. They
came under Russian rule in the 16th century. An Autonomous Province was
organized in 1921. This became an ASSR in 1934 and in 1991 became part of the
newly created Russian Federation.
