Full name: Birobijan
Location: Russian Far East.
Status: Part of the Russian Federation.
Notes: One of the more bizarre Soviet attempts at national engineering, the Jewish Autonomous Region was established in 1934 as the national homeland of all Jews. World Jewry, very sensibly, declined to emigrate to their 'homeland', which today has a Jewish population of under 6%. The flag of the region is reputed to comprise a horizontal tricolour of light blue over white over yellow stripes.
