Significant dates

The flag was adopted in 1909 with the sun on the front and the seal on the back. In 1963 both sides were made the same with the sun's rays around the field. In the late 1980's the motto "The Sunshine State" was changed to "The Mount Rushmore State".

Change of the wording on the flag

In 1992 legislative action changed the wording on the flag of South Dakota from THE SUNSHINE STATE to THE MOUNT RUSHMORE STATE. [personal note: it stayed a non-flag.] This change was the reason why the Bureau of Administration, Division of Central Services, The State Flag Account, issued the booklet "History of the South Dakota State Flag". Available at the Secretary of State; State Capitol - suite # 204; 500 East Capitol; Pierre, SD 57501-5077.
