A good non-commercial source for flag images is connected with the Flag Institute, and is run by our friend Mario Fabretto of via Caneletto 2, 34074 Monfalcone (GO), Italy.
Dott. Fabretto runs a system called 'Vexilloteca', which is a library of historical flags of various European and south-east Asian countries. These are available in Mac and PC formats.Write to him for a price list, as there is a non-commercial charge to cover production costs.
A number of members of the Flag Institute have come together to support a magazine entitled Flag Data Bank which contains articles on Computer-Aided Vexillology (CAV). Many of them have flag images used in their own projects, eg the BANCAT project in Catalonia, which is the construction of a database of flags of towns and communes in Catalonia. Others have specialised in flags of places in the Netherlands or Germany. For details of FLAG DATA BANK write to Gunner Staack, Runebergweg 8, Berlin 14089, Germany. Indeed, I would recommend a subscription to FLAG DATA BANK to anyone interested in computerised vexillology, which covers DTP and dB construction as well as graphics.
An interesting demonstration of the possibilities of CAV took place at the recent international congress in Warsaw, and I am sure it represents the future.
