There are stylized ermine tails. The ermine (a kind of mink or weasel in winter coat) is white with a black tail; sew a bunch of them together and you get a pattern occasionally used in heraldry, and in particular as the arms of the dukes of Brittany.
For whatever it's worth, Neu-Braunschweig's boat is of a pattern common in Scottish heraldry.
