By Royal resolution of 26 October 1818 a union flag for use in distant waters (that is the Mediterranean) was established. This was a variation on the flag of Sweden, the main difference being that the upper hoist corner had a white saltire on red. Also, the fields closest to the hoist were square - not rectangular as in the Swedish flag. In use until 1844. Jan Oskar Engene, 1995-NOV-25
