Origin of the flag

Gold cross on red St. Georges Cross on a white field.
The gold cross was added in the 1980s to distinquish the Guernsey flag from that of England. It is taken from the Bayeau Tapestry - the Channel Islands being the last remnants of the Duchy of Normandy from which William the Conquerer launched the last successful invasion of England. HM the Queen is head of state in the Channel Islands in her capacity as Duke of Normandy.
