Colonial Governor's Flag

"The flag of the French governors of Colonies consists of a blue field with a canton of white and red in the quarter next to the flag staff, a blue stripe as wide as the red and the white stripe separating the canton from the staff. This flag is flown below the national ensign." This would presumable be the flag flying over the vast tracts of Africa owned by the French.

There is a flag given in my old (1884ish) atlas for "French Colonies" that is divided vertically in half, fly half red, hoist flag yellow.

Colonial Governor's Flag in Senegal and Indo-China

"The flag of French Indo-China and of the Lieutenant-Governor of Senegal is a duplicate of the flag of the French governors of Colonies, except that it is swallow-tailed." No explanation of the reason for the difference.

French Possessions in India

I think there weren't any flags for enclaves, and overseas possessions and possessions in India. There is only one flag , the French Tricolour, for all French territories. Maybe there was the blue flag with the French flag in the canton for the governor. The French possessions were:

  • Pondichery (1673-1954) (possessed by UK at some moments). There are here some privileges granted by the Indian government to thank the fact that France gave without reluctance its Indian possessions, that is not the case of Portugal, I think.
  • Chandernagor (1686-1951)
  • Mahe (1721-1954)
  • Karikal (1738-1954)
  • Yanaon (1751-1954)
  • INDIA (1742-1763)
