The flag of this design was adopted on 30 march 1920 and used until 1939. On 9 may 1948 the unitairy Czechoslovakian Democratic People's Republic was proclaimed, on 11 july the Cz-Sk Socialist Republic, becomming a federal republic on 1 january 1969. It finally became the Czech & Slovak Federative Republic in 1990, and was dissolved 1 january 1993 when it was split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. At all these times it used the same flag, and the Czech Repubic adopted it as their flag, altough the Slovaks protested. Slovakia adopted it's triband with arms shifted to the hoist officially on 1 septmebr 1992 and was first hoisted two days later.

There was an golden bordered red star above the lion in Czeckoslovakian arms as a socialist symbol.
The Slovak shield on the lion's shoulder also carried a Communist image, although admittedly an unusual one. The fire on the flag is supposed to represent the campfires of the partisan (ie. Communist) resistance to the Nazis.
