The territory was detached from Amazonas in 1943 under the name of Guaporé (after a local river) and renamed in 1956 after Marshal Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon, an explorer.

The flag of Rondônia was elected in a contest, won by the proposal of Silvio Carvalho Feitosa, and it was adopted 1981-12-22. The flag symbolizes the State (the star) shining in the sky (the blue) of Brazil (represented by the yellow and green).
