Paraiba's flag honors the political events which evolved João Pessoa himself, the Liberal Alliance Party and the Revolution of 1930. The inscription "NEGO" printed in white characters on a red background originates from the contrary position adopted by Paraíba concerning the candidature of Julio Prestes for the Presidency of the Republic, sent by telegram in answer to the consultation made by Mr. Tavares Cavalcanti, intermediator of the Catete Palace. The black color expresses the mourning the State wore in honor of the assassination of João Pessoa - at that time President of Paraíba - on July 26th, 1930, in Recife by the Bachelor João Dantas. Thus the Revolution of 1930 began. Finally, the red color pays homage to the victorious Revolution itself which starting in Paraiba spread all over the South headed by Getulio Vargas and culminated in the deposition of Washington Luis who was President of the Republic at that time.

The flag of the state is work of the Party of the liberal Alliance (leader: João Pessoa) that directed the 1930's revolution. The word NEGO (with accent on the E; translated: DENIED) is referred to the posture contradicts of the State to candidacy to the presidency of Julio Prestes . The black symbolizes the duel by the assassination of João Pessoa (who was president of Paraíba) on 26 July 1930 in Recife, by the hands of João Dantas, that signalled the beginning of 1930s revolution. The red symbolizes the revolutionary victory.
