In the opinion of the poet Joaquim de Souza Andrade (Sousandrade), that created
the flag, the colors of the stripes represent the racial fusion that formed
the Brazilian ethnical groups. The white star with the blue background symbolizes
Maranhão - it is the same Beta of the Scorpius that appears on the
Brazilian Flag.

The flag of Maranhao was created by the poet Joaquin Sousa Andrade and
officialized on 6 December 1889. The bars represent the racial fusion of
the people of Maranhão and of Brazil as a rule (indian, white men
and black men); the blue field represents the sky and the star symbolizes
the State.
