The coat of arms contains tips of stems of the cotton-plant and sugar cane,
important in the region's economy.

The colors of the flag of Alagoas are taken from the traditional colors of
the local floklore, adding the shield of the province to distinguish the
flag of similar others. I have been able to verify the existence of two designs,
that constitute a mirror image; in the first the three bands are put being
begun by the blue, followed of the white and then the red; in the second
is begun with the red continues the white and then the blue; in either case
the shield of the state is found in the center. I have drawn the second design,
that offers me greater guarantees.
