In 1984 the country became socialist and changed the name to Burkina Faso and the flag to the current red over green with central yellow star. (I have seen before the explanation for the dual language name of Burkina Faso, but have forgotten it.) nick artimovich, 5-JUN-1996

Upper Volta

Burkina Faso was called Haute-Volta (Upper Volta). The flag was horisontaly black - white - red, representing three main rivers in the land - Black, White and Red Volta. The flag was addopted on 9-DEC-59
