Explication of the flag

The flag of Brussels contains a golden stylistic iris (the flower) on a blue background, with a silver contour. I believe the blue background was chosen because the European flag also contains a blue background, and the iris was chosen as a neutral symbol between the Flemish lion and the Walloon cock, and they say it used to grow on the swamps in the old ages, near the river the Zenne, flowing through Brussels.

Laws concerning the flag

Law of the 16th of Mai 1991.The emblem of the region is the iris flower. The flag is blue with a yellow iris flower bordered white.Proportions 2:3.

The law gives the possible different versions of the flag and emblem:(b=blue, y=yellow, g=gold, n=black, w=white, PANTONE)

City of Brussels versus Brussels' Capital Region

Somebody (couldn't retreive his name) consulted Louda's European Civic Coats of Arms, and the city of Brussel has a Saint-Michael, trampling the Devil, gold on red.

Brussels' Capital Region is composed of the 19 municipalities having a bilingual status, Brussels (Brussel, Bruxelles) being one of them. Filip Van Laenen, 1995-09-07
